ABSTRACT

Implementation of projects depend on various factors. These factors include; proper planning, adequate financing, organizational factors and effective communication between the stakeholders. There are many funded projects in Kiambu County as highlighted by the government reports that range from; food security projects, Water projects, housing projects, health projects, projects and educational projects among others. Despite all the efforts from the various development partners, most of the projects experience major hurdles in their life cycle and barely overcome the implementation stage. The main objective of the study was to investigate challenges facing effective implementation of road projects in Kiambu County. Specific objectives were to establish effects of project management competency, Project design, top management support and stakeholders’ participation on effective implementation of road projects in Kiambu County government. The theories discussed are; Stakeholder theory, Theory of Project Implementation, Project management Theory and Resource based theory. This research adopted a descriptive research which included surveys. The target populations for this research was 425 Roads projects initiated between 2013 and 2018 in twelve (12) sub counties within Kiambu County. The respondents were 120 road project professionals Data was analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences. According to the findings, the overall implementation of road projects in Kiambu County government was 6.784. The study also indicates that a unit increase in staff capacity led to a 0.372 on implementation of road projects; a unit increase Project design led to a 0.378; a unit increase in top management support, led to a 0.375 increases in implementation of road projects in Kiambu County government a unit increase in stakeholders’ participation led to a 0.399 increase in implementation of road projects in Kiambu County government. This means that the most significant variable was stakeholder participation followed by project design; top management support and project management competency respectively. The study recommends that competent project leaders be given the responsibility to oversee the implementation of road projects in Kiambu County. The road project design should bear in mind the list of resources i.e. work force, materials, machines since they correspond to the project. The top management support must continue to communicate with all the stakeholders during implementation of the project. Further the study recommends that stakeholder’s participation should be improved in implementation of road projects.
