INFLUENCE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND THE IMPLEMENTATION OF POVERTY REDUCTION PROJECTS IN NAIROBI COUNTY, KENYA

Implementation of poverty reduction projects are of great interests to the government, civil society organizations and the beneficiaries. Among other projects, poverty reduction projects in innovations for poverty action are among the highly funded projects by both the government and donors. Poverty reduction project is believed to be the universally accepted way of achieving economic growth in the country. In spite of poverty reduction projects being implemented in recent years by the central government, local government, non-governmental organizations, community based organizations and international organizations, relative and absolute incidence of chronic poverty continues to rise. The study seeks to fill knowledge gap by evaluating the influence of project management practices on effective implementation of poverty reduction projects in Nairobi County. The specific objectives of this study was to assess the influence of project risk management; project leadership; project stakeholders’ involvement; and project resource allocation on effective implementation of poverty reduction projects. The target population comprised of IPA Nairobi office which currently has 170 employees on various levels: five (5) executive staff, nine (9) departmental staff, fifteen (15) project associates/investigators, twenty five (25) assistant project managers, eighteen (18) team leads, ninety eight (98) field officers and 150 respondents from the slums in the CTH project. This study adopted the descriptive survey design. A descriptive survey method entails a method of data collection by interviews and questionnaires to a sample of individuals and is not only restricted to fact findings. The quantitative methods used in this research was close ended questions and likert scale statements questionnaires. Analysis was done using SPSS Version 21 software. The findings presented also show that taking all other independent variables at zero, a unit increase in project leadership lead to a 0.638 increase in effective implementation poverty reduction projects and a unit increase in project stakeholder’s involvement lead to a 0.576 increase in the effective implementation poverty reduction projects. Further, the findings shows that a unit increase in project resource allocation would lead to a 0.605 increase in effective implementation poverty reduction projects while a unit increase in project risk management lead to a 0.537 increase in the effective implementation poverty reduction projects. In terms of magnitude, the findings indicated that project leadership had the highest influence on effective implementation poverty reduction projects followed by project resource allocation, then project stakeholder’s involvement while project risk management had the least effect on effective implementation poverty reduction projects. All the variables were significant as their P-values were less than 0.05. The project managers should ensure that risk management is conducted not as routine activity but needed project management, this study recommends adoption and application of effective project leadership Practices. Nairobi county government should ensure adequate resource allocation for all the projects they are undertaking on effective implementation poverty reduction projects.
