ABSTRACT

This paper explores the role of knowledge management in shaping industry competition. The paper seeks to establish how knowledge management can foster company’s ability to develop sustainable competitive advantage. Building on Porter’s five forces model and resource based view of a firm, the author demonstrates that knowledge and knowledge management are becoming critical determinants of industry competition.

Design/methodology

This paper reviews the knowledge management literature in relation to industry competition theories and proposes a model that shows the relationship between knowledge and industry competition.

Findings

The central role played by knowledge management. The paper develops a conceptual model of how knowledge management can impact on company’s strategy, hence leading to competitive advantage.

Originality/value

Provides new insights with respect to knowledge management and industry competition, demonstrating why knowledge is an important force in industry competition.
