CITATION: Ndung’u J., M., & Ngure, S., W. (2025) Employee Rewards and Job Satisfaction of Medical Staff: A Positivist View on the Nyeri County Referral Hospital, Kenya. International Journal of Human Resource and Procurement. Vol. 14 (2) 1 – 15.

ABSTRACT

In Kenya, the health sector has experienced many challenges especially in the area of employee rewards. After the health sector was devolved to the county governments, the problem exacerbated. In this paper, we expound the problem of rewards in the Nyeri County Referral Hospital (NCRH) after devolution. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards on job satisfaction. Target population was 285 medical staffs of the hospital. Proportionate random sampling was used to select 85 respondents. Descriptive research design was adopted, while Expectancy and Instrumentality Theories of motivation were used. Primary data was collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Results indicated that extrinsic rewards had a statistically insignificant effect on job satisfaction, while intrinsic rewards had a positive and statistically significant effect on job satisfaction. In the multiple linear regression model, the influence of extrinsic rewards remained statistically insignificant and that of intrinsic rewards remained statistically significant. Future research should investigate why extrinsic rewards had a statistically insignificant effect of job satisfaction. Hindrances to implementation of employee rewards in NCRH should also be given due attention as well other factors that influence job satisfaction among the medical staff since employee rewards accounted for 12.2% of variation in job satisfaction.

Keywords: Employee rewards, extrinsic rewards, intrinsic rewards, job satisfaction.
